Focus is so important in computing and in web based forms, yet B. Hansen and I have discussed many of the frustrations coming from ambivalent or just plain bad design.

Here's one that's plaguing me on the desk top.

I'm doing some manual searching in a text log using a Linux session in one window. In another window I have a list of data in Excel.

I thought I would highlight the row I was working on in Excel so I could keep track of where I was -- but when I click in the other window, it undoes the highlighting. That is -- I cannot have two sets of focus in two different windows! So, at least in this case, focus is transferred to the immediate window.

This is probably a general statement about Windows not being a "pre-emptive multitask" system rather than a symmetric multitask environment. I don't know if the same is true for a GNOME/Linux desktop but I will sure try it out when I get home from work today!
