Housing prices are declining precipitiously here around Kent, Washington. The signs for New Homes for Sale are multiplying like weeds around corner lots. Today, enjoying the first long stretch of sunshine since September I took a bike ride and visited one new site that advertised homes "from the 200s".

I had to go in and ask.

Me: "When you say, from the 200s, do you mean from $200,000 or from $290,000".

Seller (supressing a smile as he eyed some other potential buyers easdropping): "Um...well, there are some townhouses starting at $239,000".

Ok, I think, I guess we're talking about what digits are significant. To me, "from the 200s" means that there is a house selling which has a 2 in the 6th position, and two zeroes in the fifth and fourth position. But, to Centex, only the 6th position is significant.

It's a mathematically tenable position, but is it legal. I'll have to research!
