If I could get specially trained monkeys and give them a good user interface (not a typewriter), then I could have them produce "Hamlet" in 700 years, say, instead of 100,000.

A new unit: the monkey-typewriter-year [MTY], as in "how many MTY's would it take to do <X>?"

I think computer programmers would be the most likely to use the new unit "Yeah, I've coded over 120,000 MTY's of code." It might look good on resumes too.

I'm assuming your monkey interface prevents them from trying the exact same thing over and over.

But suppose that after 700 years they got a comma wrong. It would take another 700 years to try everything again with the comma in a different spot (which can sometimes change the whole meaning of a sentence!)

So I'd have to say at first blush 700 years seems very optimistic, but then I noticed you didn't specify how many monkeys. Or how specially trained they are. :)
