Some strange forecasts and results come from linear projection of existing technologies...

You can watch author, Daniel H. Wilson's reading here:

Meet roboticist Daniel H. Wilson co-author "Where's My Jetpack?: A Guide to the Amazing Science Fiction Future That Never Arrived," a hilarious look at the future imagined through movies, television, and comic books. He reveals which technologies are already available and those that do not yet exist - explaining what stands in the way of making them real.

This echoes my complaint with the concept of the "coming singularity event". (One of my web clients is a big believer and had me study up on it.)

The predictions of Christ's second-coming Armageddon end-of-the-world line of thinking is similar in it's reliance on linear projection of world problems.

But in each, there are logarithmic limits as well as events that change the whole direction of progress or decline. (And God isn't going to be manipulated by circumstance, anyway.)

I will say however, that Vernor Vinge can write a thoroughly enjoyable tale with the singularity concept, so I like the concept itself, as long as it stays in the realm of science fiction, as opposed to humanity trying to evolve itself to the next "level".
