I've found one way of embedding the Portland DIY esthetic into the staid middle-class lifestyle: the kilogig.

It's great that you've found some crafty thing that others haven't noticed yet, and that you have enough pro-business mojo to imagine taking it to the next level but...

Well, have you really done all the math? are you really going to be woodburning, arc welding, glue gunning or glitterizing in your garage, basement or closet *all* winter? Better make sure you have a sales outlet, first, and better yet, you should have already proven you have a kilogig: a gig that will bring in a net $1000 in sales.

When you've sold your full kilogig of bike rack cozies and/or photo studies of storm grates, it might be time to expand your business (start knitting with bamboo?), or maybe just concentrating on a regular career and / or starting a family. The kilogig tells you where you stand.

The beauty of the kilogig is that you don't expect much out of it. For instance, it might pay for itself. The chance that it might lead to a publishing deal or recurring spot on daytime tv may well balance out the basement filled with yarn samples and / or the den now filled with origami.

In Portland, there is one particular institution that makes the kilogig into a good bet: Crafty Wonderland. They have their big sales twice a year. Get ready. It's time to see if your hobby can lead to fame and / or fortune and / or pay for itself. If you keep your day job, you have a chance to discover yourself, one kilogig at a time. We'd all like to see what you've learned.
