I replied with this Facebook comment:

The central point of punk is that it is rebelling against something. It rebels against musicianship and artfulness. Today's reality tv culture has no such thing. Miley Cyrus is not a rebellion...she is an Acceleration of the current trend of participation. What people do on stage has to be imitated, and for that it has to be simple, so that it can be copied in tweets, blogs, feeds, parodies. It has to go from TV to kids at their high school aping it in seconds. Miley Cyrus is recycling the workaday world of internet memes (the tongue out the side as simply the typical "selfie" shot in a mirror) back to its progenitors...who then consume and recycle it back to their queen bee. Ms. Cyrus is a brilliant first among equals in the new omni-media world where dance/song/video/text are sent out simultaneously and responded to within the network. She is not punk. She is Participation.
