Last week I staying in what I consider a 21st Century hotel...(some might call it a motel because of its car orientation). Cambria Suites in Fort Collins, CO.

No it wasn't in a high density urban center.

It was in a clean modern suburb across from a tech center (HP, others). It was near to the highway entrance. I-25.

Why was it modern? Because it had two large LCD tvs. It had Direct TV. But more than that, it had not only room for 2 queen sized beds, but also a media/work area, with it's own TV and free Wifi, and access to the LAN with a retractable RJ-45 but also -- wall ports for HDMI (to pipe your laptop into the tv, if you wanted to watch YouTube) and printing and usb!!!

It also had a Wolfgang Puck's express cafeteria in the lobby and a modern gym pool and workout area. Cost per night? $88!

But mostly it acknowledges that people today spend a lot of time...a lot of time...using their computers not only for work but for social networking and gaming. So, often hotels, like Hollywood movies, seem mired in lifestyles that no longer exist any more. Paying for Wifi or no wifi. People live in media's part of the world...we check it, use it for information. Free wifi is like free parking...part of what is expected in a modern suburb.
