The split system Point of Sale system. A point of ire. That is, the self service checkout line in retail which lets you scan your own items and make choices on a touch screen...until it comes time to pay and there is an awkward disjoint over the card reader which has its own screen, sometimes a simple text one with push buttons, sometime complicated in an of itself.

The worst of it is that it results in a lot of redundancies especially the famed Credit/Debit choice which I always seem to have to make twice (and which is understandably difficult as merchants would prefer the lower fees of debit where as its in my interest to get cash back from using my credit card for everything).

Today at IKEA I ran an item through and it asked me "Do I have an IKEA Family card?" Well, yes, but this is like Retailus Interruptus. I'm all set to move items through the system and now I have to enter a card. In today's case the card reader lit up and I took my Family Card and swiped it though. It seemed like an odd request because it doesn't have a magnetic stripe, just a bar code. I swiped all four sides, but nothing. Asked for help...and the checkout monitor had to completely reset my transaction, cancel the first item scanned and then read my card with the laser wand. Oh..that's what you wanted!

Well, anyway, I hate systems that are designed not for the use of the customer but are a claptrap of bogus interfaces because of everyone wanting a piece of the pie. You can have your pie...lots of it. Just don't waste my time with two cards, two readers and no clear directions.
