Lately much is made of the term Conservative.

Almost all the associations seem wrong!

A quick Google tells me:

Quote:
Adjective:
Holding to traditional attitudes and values and cautious about change or innovation, typically in politics or religion.

Noun:
A person who is averse to change and holds to traditional values and attitudes, typically in politics.

Yes, well, but I think some of us are Rip Van Winkles when it comes to what we think is the status quo. For example, Roe v. Wade, establishing the right of a woman to abortion is now 40 years in effect. The Civil Rights acts, which generally espouse equality across cultural (race, sex, religion) lines, for nearly 50.

If you had to define the status quo of America today you would include:

-The right to choose an abortion
-Ready access to birth control
-Racial, sexual, religious tolerance
-High degree of personal choice and liberty
-Government mediated capitalism

These are the accepted norms of society in 2012. Anyone who holds these principals can rightly be called a social conservative. Those who would want to change these things...are not.
