In March 1994, I wrote an article for Computers in Libraries magazine titled The Global Village and You - Give Something in Return. This was an adjunct to my speech at Internet World describing the Internet in the McLuhan spectrum as hotter than what you think because of its emphasize on literacy and text, and cooler than that because of how it treats text differently than books, and articles.

Since my article seems to be increasingly hard to Google, I thought I'd at least make mention of it here to perhaps re-index the thing. Somehow I had imagined that an article such as this would become more, rather than less accessible but so be it...in this case I had to pay $2.50 for 90 days of access to my own work!

The facts:

JA Bailo, The global village and you: give something in return, Computers in
Libraries 14 (1994) (3), pp. 4446.

The Link (where I found it, and paid $2.50 to see it)

So you see, the interactive multimedia computer at once gives us creative power that we can buy at the price of learning a computer language or application. It gives us enormous leverage because the symbols that one can employ are the same as what large organizations of people use. Now, more than ever, the men and women who can master these technologies will hold a long lever and be standing at just the right place to move the world.

And even if Information at Your Fingertips is more concept than reality, so what? We can all go out and start putting together our own personal and local interpretation of this vision (stolen from Xerox, by the way) to use. The 1990s are the age of the individual, the local and the personal, and this will be reflected in the uses of these new global media technologies.
