I think the term smartphone is a misnomer. It speaks of a device that does what a traditional phone does...really well. But iPhones, Androids and Win7 "phones" aren't...they are really the UMPC -- ultra mobile PCs that we've long waited for. Perhaps because we imagined them more as a netbook...a super small laptop that doesn't violate the traditional desktop paradigm. Yes, it's portable, but really, you still need a desk to put it on in order to use it.

The smart phone is a computer...and it's as powerful and versatile as the PC in its own way...and you can put it in your pocket. And it knows where you are and it can tell other people where you are.

As the fast moving ads of gaming companies proclaim...this changes everything!

And it's not so much a revolution in computing...as potential evolution in the workplace.

We work at desks. Even in home offices, we go someplace, sit down...and use a PC. Even in Starbucks we do this. We stop. We plunk down a 10 lb object, or sit at desk with a 20 lb object...and we "do work".

But what if work is something else....what if work is a smart mob, where a "boss" calls his workers and says, "in 2 hours, meet on the soccer field, to discuss your ideas for our next product". And what if you respond, in txt, with a photo..."start without me, I'm taking pictures on the river trail of inspirational scenes for the new design..."

The work is not sitting. The work becomes hunting and gathering, collecting, discussing. Maybe editing, modifying, presenting require a Desktop back at the home office, but certainly, we've moved the input device way off in and around the world.

Could even major decision making be made with collected tidbits of information, inputs from webcams, audio recordings and textings without a multidimensional spreadsheet? Could we start to use that untapped neural network we carry around on our shoulders for analyzing?

It means we no longer take a light rail to work...that is work! Looking out the window and counting trucks in the low rise factories becomes input to new products.

The whole landscape becomes your workplace.
