Jon Young provides a series of lectures relating to being in nature,
including one I just reviewed, "Advanced Bird Language: the concentric
circles of nature".

Bird language might better be called bird behavior, but bird language
is such an evocative term that he uses it to describe the actions and
reactions of other creatures as well. By his description, weasels,
minks, dogs, and even insects speak "bird language".

His approach turns the stereotype I have of bird-watching on its head.
Instead of the "completist" approach of building up one's life list of
birds seen, he emphasizes spending vast stretches of time observing
bird behavior. Although the factual bits are valuable, the thing I
appreciate most is the subtle change of perspective that I got from
listening to his lectures: that communication between an individual
and wild birds is possible and useful. This process of interacting
with birds can also teach you about yourself.

I look forward to having a chance this spring to test out some of
Mr. Young's teachings, especially how to avoid being a "birdplow"
when walking through the wilderness.
