A couple of hundred "crafters" set up tables in Portland's convention
center this weekend to sell their crafts. Although one could be forgiven
for thinking along the lines of a holiday Bazaar in a church basement,
this event has a distinctly younger vibe, with an emphasis both on
DIY and on re-use. There were many products that were appealing, but
I found myself drawn to those that demonstrated a creative re-use of
common items.

I found 2 booths that took apart unused books and re-used the covers
and a few of the pages as part of a journal or notebook (adding extra
blank pages). 2 vendors also made purses constructed, from old hardback
books (in one case), and laminated packaging (in the other).
Some folks made jewelry from little parts from a typewriter, while others
made bracelets from the f-stop and aperture rings from old cameras.

My favorite item was a woman who constructed mini-terrariums out
of glass she blew herself. Some of these were about the size of an
extra large egg. She added a bit of dirt, and a little plant. Quite clever.

I knew that these folks were crafty, but I needn't have been wary.
