Today the batteries died in my garage door opener, my smoke alarm, and a driveway alarm. Is there something about this time of year, or the climate that has this effect? Do battery sales spike in early spring? Is it just a personal curse, or caused indirectly by my changing behavior, or a pattern of neglect?

It would be soothing to think it had something to do with the weather, that everyone else had problems with their batteries today. The first rain after the first run of four warm sunny days. Hey! it brought out the ants.

Maybe the recent earthquake caused an EMP in Portland?

It's interesting though, as conceivably, given the chemical nature of batteries, there might be a confluence of factors (temperature, moisture, electrostatic charge of the atmosphere) that could either drain, or act as a catalyst accelerating the reactions that produce electricity in the cell.

I guess a test might be to take a battery and hook it up to a meter and leave it standing. Then record the amperage/output of the battery and see if there are instants where the current "spikes" or the voltage drops precipitously.
