I'm in the middle of watching Zero Effect on Netflix.

Sometimes when I really like a movie, I stop watching it in the middle and give myself a day or two to "digest" it before consuming the whole thing.

Zero Effect is a fantastic modern film noire set in LA and Portland, Oregon featuring Bill Pullman as the "world's greatest private eye" and Ben Stiller as his executive assistant.

At one point in the movie, they are arguing. Pullman plays a person who is brilliant, idiosyncratic, yet paranoid. Stiller is down to earth, but puts up with Pullman for his unarguable genius. Stiller rants in response to Pullman's claim that everyone is monitoring him:

Quote:
There are no evil guys!

There are no innocent guys...

There are just....GUYS!

I recommend this flick.

I too enjoyed it and recommend it.

It's hard for me to disentangle the "local" effect, the thrill
of seeing familiar landmarks shown in films or TV. This
effect is augmented by the "putting together the geographic
puzzle" effect one gets when one's hometown is the visual
setting for much of the action. The characters are heading
West, but the next scene is to the East, and so on. As I
recall it, Zero Effect was especially interesting this way.

Portlandic patriotism aside, Pullman's portrayal was fascinating,
as was other's responses. I forget the plot elements by now,
should probably rewatch it, since it's been over 5 years.
I could imagine some people absolutely hating this movie, but
it triggered a Bill Pullman film festival at my house. Probably
time for another one.
