The automated U-Scan checkout system seems ripe for spoofing because its realtively new, it's in a high volume situation, it's a cluster of many technologies and its administrated by people who are probably not tech savvy.

(Kids, dont' try crime. I'm just being funny.)

Ok, so today I almost walked out of Top Food with a free head of lettuce. Here's how I (accidentally) did it. I was buying two items. A frozen pie and a head of lettuce. I swiped the frozen pie in normally and put it in the bag (which means its on the 2nd weighing scale to track that its been put there).

Then I put the lettuce on the scanner. But, instead of entering the PLU code, I hit the payment button. Not intentionally, I was just being absent headed. At that point, the weight tracking system must turn off, because it didn't make a fuss about the lettuce on the first weighing scale).

Curious, I continued, put the lettuce into the bag. Still no alarm. Paid with debit card and walked pass the overseer.

As I got to point where I figured I could commit a crime, I went back and mentioned that I hadn't been charged for the lettuce and paid up.

Of course, a more enterprising criminal might save the most expensive product in his shopping cart...for last!
