Reading the cyberpunk stories of the last decades, you'd surmise the trend was ever narrowing encroachment of the 2D world on the 3D world. People who do symbol manipulation in financial markets make billions, while those who join pipes make hundreds.

Clearly, the skills to master are those where you manipulate 2D symbols -- and even more, in the past the idea was manipulating 2D symbols to control 3D reality. As in, I write this monitoring software to run a factory. However, in more recent times, the battle becomes entirely 2D -- as in, all my friends chat with text messages, or, I created a leveraged fund that takes the derivative of increase of these stocks and sends the profit to my account in the Cayman Islands.

2D has whomped on 3D big time. And 3D has gotten more and more restrictive. We must ride on roads and walk on sidewalks. We must bike on bike lanes. We have almost worked it to the point where all our travel will be essentially 1D -- getting on a light rail system.

But I have hope. I think that the new Netbooks -- lightweight but full keyboard and screen laptops that are light and have battery life of many hours will let us leave mom's basement and take the 2D world into the 3D world. Yes, we have cell phones and PDAs, but those never seemed to give us the full Internet experience on the road. And even today's laptops seem no more portable than the old suitcase style Osbornes of the the sense of being 9 pounds and only functional with an assortment of wires and cables and only useable for an hour or two when disconnected.

WiMax and Netbooks are the real innovation and decoupling of Internet life from living in mom's basement. But I hope that more than just that it leads to an ever active 3D life for people, taking knowledge and hypertext into the streets.

At the same time, I think we are closing the many "loopholes" in society that let keyboard pressers waltz away with all the prizes. I'm hoping that an SEC with teeth will start imposing some limits...or, the simple dismantling of some of the more arcane "financial instruments" during this period of Fed monetary inflation.
