The Latte Year is fundamentally a measurement of money. The
amount of money required to buy lattes for one year. As such, the
baseline value would be the cost of 1 latte/day * 365 days per year.
As a first approximation, I propose the latte year = $1000.
For some people this will be a shockingly large number:
a new car might cost 20 latte years (LY's)! But for others, low
enough to consider increasing latte consumption. Considering
that many people are willing to spend 2 MWJE's for owning and
operating a car, 0.11 MWJEs, or 1 LY, may not seem like much.

I wonder how the Latte market is doing at this time.
It seems like it's been a fairly solid thing since the early Nineties, rising with inflation.
But now with Starbucks shrinking and the people cutting back the niceties, the price must be in play. In fact, McDonald's, whose drip coffee (supplied by SBC) is rated the best all around, has been marketing it's $1.49 latte against Starbucks, especially now that both have many drive-thru locations.
Thus perhaps we've come off the Latte Standard, as we did off the Gold Standard back in the 70s... |
