Marshall McLuhan viewed The Media as an extension of man's mind. He made the analogy, the hammer is the extension of the hand. The wheel is the extension of the foot. Media is the extension of our thoughts -- we use it to project our ideas and communicate with greater distance, clarity, precision.

But there seems to be a point where the "extensions" detach from their maker and become a "system" -- something with independent growth patterns.

A society is not merely a collection of people, an individual is born into a society and adds to it, but is also shaped by it and is required to conform, or faces the barriers due a revolutionary.

The Internet is such a society or system. I don't think it can be said that the Internet in its present form is a direct analog of anything purely human. In fact, it is now the environ in which many humans work, play and live considerable hours of the day.

We are its extensions in the physical world: feeding it, growing it, shaping it and being shaped by it.
