I recently saw the controversial film "Tropic Thunder"....which caused a ruckus because one of the actors, playing a bad action actor, who also starred in a "serious" (but bad) film about a mentally other-abled person. The "r-word" was used liberally in the film and some took offense.

The actual insults in the comedy are several levels of context removed from someone going out and calling a person a "retard" so it's hard to know what, if any, a response should be. Certainly, some took offense.

This is why I offer a new hippy-hoppy slang term to describe people with Downs Syndrome: 'somes (long o, zooomes) as in chromosomes as in an extra 21st one.

So, you could go up to your friend and say 'Some...wassup?. Or start dancing and singing who let the 'somes out?

See this way there is not a perjorative and complimentary term that can be used....like a rock group could be called the Trisomes -- for trisomy.
