If you are filling up your 12 gallon tank every week, you are consuming
about 5000 pounds of gasoline every year.

Even in one week, that's 100 pounds.

What other commodity do we routinely buy 100 pounds at a time,
with hardly a second thought? Water. Sure. I just bought 5000
pounds of concrete blocks (250 blocks) to make a retaining wall.
Not much else. I certainly don't buy 100 pounds of groceries each
week.

One 12 gallon fill-up = 100 pounds. I probably couldn't carry 100
pounds across the gas station lot without some help.

My car gets about 2.5 miles per pound. Right now, gas is selling
for about 38 cents per pound.

My theory is that by thinking of gas in terms of weight, the enormity
of our gas consumption of it is brought into stark relief.
