I'm looking forward to trying this one out. USPS has made a regional variation of the popular "flat rate" box. Special "Priority mail regional rate boxes" (https://www.prioritymail.com/regional_rates.asp) are available only via delivery from the USPS, and are not available from local post offices. Likewise, postage must be printed online.

If you can get through these hoops, and your package has a reasonable weight (these packages are available in sizes roughly corresponding to a shoe box or a shirt box), then they can be shipped via priority mail, with online tracking, for as little as $5 to nearby locations. Without delving too deeply, this rate would apply to locations within a few hundred miles. For 1000 miles, the rate might be $7-8.

This could have a significant positive effect on commerce, assuming that it becomes more popular. In a world where I can ship for $5 instead of $11, more things become practical to buy or sell. Previously, in some instances, shipping costs can exceed purchase prices. Lowered shipping can bring these situations back into balance.

Commerce aside, this change raises my spirits a little. It makes me think about sending out gifts. Christmas in September?
