This thread tracks a prediction made by the Bailo Model (first elucidated in Grist.org in 2007) that desert areas will receive more rainfall as a consequence of nature-made global warming.
Increased arable and livable land is one of the many beneficial aspects of climate change in the 21st century.

Heavy rainfalls hit Mecca amid holiday-Saudi media
Quote: | RIYADH, Feb 13 (Reuters) - Heavy rainfalls over Mecca on Saturday submerged some districts and streets in Islam's holiest city, Saudi media reported, raising fears of a repeat of deadly floods in a neighbouring city in November.
[...]
Mecca's location at the heart of a mountainous desert valley makes it vulnerable to flash floods that can be caused by unusually strong rainfalls. The Kaaba had to be repaired several times in the past after being damaged by floods. |

The rain in Spain leaves bulls skinny and in pain
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2011127693_apeuspainskinnybulls.html
Quote: | The rain in Spain is usually good news, but it's been coming down hard pretty much every day for two months in Andalusia and Extremadura, the southern regions where most of the country's fighting bull ranches are. The ground is soaked and so are the bulls, heralding an odd and unpredictable start to the bullfighting calendar. |

We will go and live in deserts after this whole earth become desert. At least we will find a place to live with water. |

Phoenix-area rainfall busts records, may persist
Quote: | The storm that dropped record amounts of rain and knocked out power throughout the Valley on Saturday is expected to continue to a lesser extent today, and meteorologists expect another round of showers on Monday.
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport reported about 1.06 inches of rain Saturday, shattering the record of 0.43 inch set on the same date in 1985. Tucson International Airport also broke a record with 0.71 inch, according to the National Weather Service. |

Scores of stranded Arizona hikers rescued from rushing water
Quote: | Dozens of stranded Arizona hikers have been rescued after flooding rains, according to The Associated Press. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said that forty to fifty adults and children had to be rescued Saturday in Bear Canyon northeast of Tucson, reports the Arizona Daily Star. Ground rescue teams and a helicopter participated in the daring rescue operation.
[..]
“I’ve never seen anything like this,” one of the stranded hikers told KGUN-TV. “I’ve gotten caught in rain out here, but nothing to the point where I had to be rescued.” |

Study sees climate upside in greening arid regions
Quote: | Their mathematical model predicted a foliage increase of 5% to 10%, based on the 14% hike in atmospheric CO2 from 1982 to 2010, for the regions they studied: the southwestern corner of North America, Australia's outback, the Middle East and some parts of Africa.
What actually happened? Satellites showed an 11% increase in foliage after adjusting data for precipitation. |
