I watch a lot of movies from all decades. One thing that fascinates me is the near absense of obesity among actors. In fact, in most instances, a rotund actor is the outlier and labelled specially (fatty).

Watching Mel Brooks Silent Movie (1976) it seems that even as late as 1970, obesity had not afflicted us. Funny, by Anne Bancroft, James Caan, even Burt Reynolds were trim as they come...in fact, Bancroft slim in her evening gown might have been called anorexic in the present.

Actor Dom Deluise plays the "fat guy"...at one point he has a craving for blueberry pie and the next second he's seen devouring one whole.

In 1980 Dom Deluise was in a movie called Fatso.

Now tell me, how much would Deluise stand out walking around 2010 middle America:

Yet, back then he was considered a fatty.

So, what changed? Some say corn syrup and that's a good a guess as any. In Silent Movie at one point they work up a scene with a Coke machine that launches its cans as projectiles. They were the old style square cylinder cans...back when Coke was still made with real sugar (I think).

So is that it? Are we seeing in that Coke machine the future...the thing that would make the majority of us so rotund that Dom could look down his (slender) nose at us?
