At IKEA the other day, I noticed that the line for cash registers followed a bell curve distribution. Everyone lined up in the center where the traffic from the store directed, and very few at the ends.

I scooted over the far end, where there was only one person in line. However I saw boxes under the checkout aisle that said in red letters "CASHLANE RETURN". I wondered if this meant "cash only" and asked the cashier but she said no, I could use credit. Cashlane simply referred to any checkout aisle.

So, I wondered if others had made the same mistake and kept away from these lanes, or if they simply were following the shortest path to the registers and thus ending up on a very long line.

IKEA should add clear signage to direct people to the less used registers and remove those "CASHLANE RETURN" boxes.

Also, here's the second one for free. I reported in the past that their card reader menus were very confusing. In order to use a credit card, I had to read the Debit card menu and then hit Cancel before being allowed to go to credit. Perhaps this is by intent, making harder to pay by credit (and maybe saving IKEA money). However, since I get rewards for using my credit card, it's not in my interest to save them money. In the end I did it wrong yet again, and my card was declined until I went through the right menus. Not a pleasant experience, and one that IKEA might want to fix.
