For the past years we've been hearing about the demise of the middle class. This seems impossible to me. How do you get rid of the "middle" of something? It would be like one of those cartoons where the guy shoots a cannon into the bad cat and he ends up with a giant hole in his stomach.

If there are three or more of anything in a group, then there's a middle. Maybe that middle is more like the bottom than the top, or the other way around. There are 300 million Americans. We could say the middle class is American number 100,000,000 through American number 199,999,999.

We are often told the top 1 percent of Americans control all the wealth. I could worry about that or I could say who cares...I don't know any of those people. And they're not shopping in the same supermarket as me, so my prices could stay low.

That's why luxury goods are better than high taxes. As long as you can sell a rich person a car for $200,000 and a head of lettuce for $6, then they are just as the 'middle' class.
