I defined this term on the Wikipedia more than a year ago, but they deleted it, confirming my view that Wiki has a definite political bent and there's no use arguing (and that's also why web knowledge should not be centralized into Google Warehouses or Wiki Monsters).

Therefore, again I say:

Quote:
Crypto-Malthusians are any of host of ideologues who believe that Man and his needs will exceed the resources of Earth, either by consumption, or destruction, of those resources.

The Crypto comes into play because despite attempts to disguise it, alot of current thinking comes down to just that.

You also posted about it here on YRIHF, and I recall some spirited debate.

As far as the term itself goes, I get the distinct feeling of being spun.

I guess I must be just a regular Malthusian. It seems as inevitable
as the grave that man's needs will exceed the resources of the earth.
It is only a question of how soon. Since I make no attempt to disguise
this (sensible) view, I guess I'm not "Crypto".

As far as being an ideologue goes, personally, I do not think of myself
that way, so that would seem to disqualify me from your definition.
If you think that I am, then that might be an interesting topic.

One can sensibly make such a case, it's just that the original Malthus did that and seemed to have been proven tragically wrong.

However, it is a stance that can be tweaked and presented based on new data and so on.

Believing that would, yes, make you a basic Malthusian.

However, I added the Crypto- to define those who are really Malthusians in disguise (Global Warmers, Peak Oilers, etc) where the basic line is man will grow (use up) resource A faster than A can grow.

I brought it up again, because I read a recent article by a UW group that said that the worst effect of global warming would be reduction in the food supply...from a personal stance I thought it amusing that they had come full circle back to Malthus and food supply.
