Can it be that I haven't seen this movie?

On an airplane, at 30,000 feet, without those
funny headphones, airtubes really,
because I didn't want to pay the three dollars.

Or late at night, waking up with the television on.

How else to explain how I could write the whole
story, scene by scene? We all could. The small
town girl, sports and first loves, wondering about
her popularity, but finding her place, that first
big cause, and on and on. Mostly it's cheering,
and bunting.

It'd make a pretty good movie despite my cliched
approach. Close-up to a little tear in my eye
when I vote for her opponents.

This is an interesting turn of phrase (and kudos to Democrat electioneers).

The phrase "soccer Mom" has taken on sacred proportions in America. It represents motherhood, kids and minivans. The Repubicans thought they could platform the meme to "Hockey Mom" and get the buy in.

Instead, the Democrats played on the "hockey" aspect rather than the "Mom". Now hockey is actually one of the faster growing sports in America, more than soccer which seems to have forever stalled out in the middle class suburbs as a participatory, but not a spectator sport. But hockey connotates violence and hence war, (while soccer projects pastoralism and Euro-pacifism) and people were just tired of war. So, good move, Democratic strategists.

However, I think there is another aspect of this that worked for the Left which is that many people who would not say it actually hate the idea of middle class, nuclear family soccer moms in low mileage SUVs, breeding children and using up gas. So there was the sub rosa appeal to the anti-kid, urban contingent that also brought in the vote.

If the difference between hockey and soccer was played up by
Democratic "spinners", then I didn't notice it. Nor do I think that
*I* spun it in any way.

I just have learned to recognize the language of "high concept"
in the context of Hollywood movies.
