Web Marketing That Hopes to Learn What Attracts a Click

Quote:
If its a woman looking at a kitchen with a stainless steel refrigerator, they can show a stainless steel product, said Jessica Frandson, the vice president for marketing for Simple Green. While Ms. Frandson gave Adisn a general idea of what she wanted, she also let the agency do almost random combinations with about 10 percent of her ads to see which of those combinations had the highest click-through rates.

Every once in a while I "accidentally" click a banner ad, usually it's the skyscraper format on the right. The one that got me last time was a financial institution ad that showed a wallet dropped on the road and had two radio buttons "contact the owner" and "leave it there". I impulsively picked one and i immediately took me to their identity theft pages.

I did stay a while and read a bit, but I don't remember who it was and don't remember seeing any offers or anything to buy, so I'm not sure how effective it was in the end, but they did snag a click off me.

I know better than to click those things but every once in a while they get me. Text links? I click those all day long, if there's a hint of something interesting at the other end.
