I learned this from a taped interview with Terry Jones of Monty Python.

I can recall thinking at one time that a guinea was maybe 20 pounds,
and another time thinking it was a synonym for a pound. Then, I guess,
I just gave up.

Now I wonder how these units were devised. My wild guess (maybe
I should be posting this in the Hoop Shots forum) is that a guinea is
a pound plus a "tip".
