The energy in one gallon of gas (1.0 GGEs) equals...

37 kilowatt hours (kWh)

Note: at 10 cents per kWh (in Oregon), the equivalent electrical
energy costs $3.70 (including "delivery").


COMPARING to HYDROGEN
==================

ENERGY

Going by the information that it takes 16.5 kWh to electrolize
the hydrogen from one gallon of water, I place the theoretical
maximum energy of the hydrogen derived from one gallon of water
to be about 45% of that in gasoline. Based on these figures,
hydrogen generated by paying 10 cents per kWH would cost over $8
for the equivalent of one gallon of gas (assuming no extra costs
associated with compressing the gas, or inefficiencies associated
with extracting or distributing it).


STORAGE

Storing uncompressed hydrogen generated from one gallon
of water takes about 135 cubic feet.

Storage for one GGE (gallon of gas equivalent) of uncompressed
hydrogen would require 300 cubic feet.

Assuming 30 miles per GGE in a vehicle, driving 300 miles on
hydrogen, would require 3000 cubic feet of storage if the gas
is uncompressed, the size of a 20 by 20 by 8ft room.


COMPRESSION

Clearly, hydrogen needs to be compressed to be practical for
most applications. The cost to compress Hydrogen depends
on the level of compression. It turns out that Hydrogen is the
most difficult gas to compress. Furthermore, some sources
claim that pressurization to 800 atmospheres is required for
practical use in a vehicle.

For the cost of compressing hydrogen, I've seen figures ranging
from 12% to 30+% of the energy in the gas. 20% seems like a
good rough estimate.
