I was reading an article about Seattle's underutilized street car (SLUT -- South Lake Union Trolley) and this part caught my eye...

Even after crediting the streetcar with a share of pass sales, passengers still cover only about 14 percent of operations, compared with 22 percent for the countywide bus system. (Cash fares on Metro buses cover 6 percent of operating costs.)

So, I did some math. If a bus fare only covers six percent of operating costs, that means that a true fare (or a fair fare), would be 100/6 * $1.50 or $25.00. Wow.

Now, Puget Sound cabs are highly regulated and extremely costly because of the limited number of licenses. Even still, the last time I took a cab from Kent to Seattle (16 miles) it was $40. Now say that 3 people share a cab from Kent. Even if they tip the driver $10, and make it $50, that's still a savings of $25!

So, why not just shelve the "transit system" entirely and use private cabs...especially ones that are more deregulated or even a public cab-based transit system?!

I think you need to redo your math.

The 6% figure was for cash fares. You need to include monthly pass revenues. I haven't done the math myself yet; I'll wait until you re-do it before seeing whether I agree with your conclusion.

Best regards...
