At the local Republican 47th meeting, we were asked to come up with catch phrases and platform issues for the party to use (yes, contrary to popular opinion, Republicans work from the grass roots up).
The Democratic buzzword was "Progressive" (or the vernacular "change"). I didn't have a good word for them, but I emphasized the idea of reform more than change. The difference being between those who feel the system is wrong (Dems) versus those who feel the system is good, but that it may be managed by corrupt individuals (not allowing everyone in).
I guess I now feel a good term is Republican Reformation.
So, what we need to do is sweep the "insiders" out and put some outsiders in. The game in America has become so "in grown" -- our media and society are rife with insider references and jokes. A recent Saturday Night Live poked fun at their own (NBC) shows "going hard" on Hillary Clinton and soft on Obama for questioning. Five minutes later, the real Hillary Clinton showed up and traded light humor with the person imitating her. NBC also has a show (30 Rock) about a live comedy show at NBC where former SNL players appear as well as their most common host (Alec Baldwin). And they said the Rat Pack was about insiders?!
The problem is for those outside looking in who just don't want to know, at some point it all stops making sense. Words begin to have meanings that are so multifaceted, or the opposite of what is generally understood, that conversation becomes inane.
A broader Reformation could bring about Disambiguation:
And that is what we need...a return to a level lexical playing field so we can talk about the real world yet again, stripped of winks, pats on the back and gladhanding. |
