Bigfooting is a term describing the situation where a political event becomes so important that the local newsman is replaced by his larger, and more robust, national counterpart.

If found a description of the term in Robert Shrum's "No Excuses", p 420:
Quote:

One day, our meager press contingent, consisting of a few reporters and the network technicians and "imbeds", young novices who were the cost-cutting way to cover the campaign, was "big-footed"....The Boston Globe's Tom Oliphant explained how a corps of the regular Kennedy beat reporters coined it when Drummond Ayres from the New York Times was temporarily displaced by one of the paper's mega-journalists, Hedrick Smith, who had unusually large feet.

You also see this behavior in detective work where the local cops find the body, then the detectives come in and say "okay boys, you've done your job", followed by the FBI, etc.
